TSSA remains committed to bargaining in good faith to reach a first Collective Agreement with OPSEU and to continue meeting with OPSEU as they focus on items that are aimed at reaching an agreement that could work for both parties.

During the strike, non-union employees, such as supervisors with the required training, certification and experience, are performing inspections. In many cases, these are TSSA’s most highly qualified inspection experts. TSSA has also engaged additional contractors with the required certification to complete inspections.

TSSA has been negotiating in good faith for many months and remains committed to reaching a first collective agreement in order to avoid a strike. TSSA will continue to meet with OPSEU with the assistance of a conciliator ahead of the July 21 strike date in an effort to finalize an agreement and avoid any disruption.

The original mounting position of the blocked vent switch may not allow the boiler to switch off in a timely manner during a blocked vent condition, posing a Carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.

There was a meeting today between the Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL), Ontario Ministry of Government and Commercial Services (MGCS), the Technical Safety and Standards Authority (TSSA) and Operating Engineers Advisory Council (IPE is an active participant) to review what tools are available to Operating Engineers when faced with reprisals in the workplace.

After conducting a thorough fee review, TSSA has determined that an inflationary fee increase of 2.6% is necessary in two program areas to continue to cover the costs of operations in these sectors. There is no planned fee increase for other programs.
